Types of Attic Insulation
Insulation plays an important role in a home’s energy efficiency. It prevents conditioned air from escaping through the ceiling, keeping your home at a comfortable temperature and helping you save on heating and cooling costs. It also reduces outside noise, especially if your home is located near busy roads, construction or other sources of loud outside noise.
If your metal building insulation is low or you have air leaks, it’s a good idea to add more. However, it’s also a good idea to analyze your whole house for energy efficiency issues and make any necessary roof or other repairs before adding insulation. The Department of Energy recommends an R-30 rating or higher for attic insulation, depending on where you live.
One of the most common types of attic insulation is fiberglass batts, also known as blanket or rolled insulation. It comes in a range of thicknesses and R-values, although if you choose a thicker option, it can be difficult to install on your own. Fiberglass is a more cost-effective solution than other types of insulation, but it can lose its R-value over time and is susceptible to moisture. It also is a favorite snack of raccoons and can require regular maintenance to avoid rodent infestation.
Benefits of Spray Foam Insulation in Your Attic
Another type of attic insulation is loose fill, or blown-in, fiberglass. This is a greener option, as it uses recycled glass spun into fibers. It’s also non-combustible and is safe to install in any type of attic. It does, however, require a professional installation and it can be difficult to properly inspect the finished product for problems such as compression or pest infestation.
